Sammy Johns has written a number of hit songs for other artists, but the one he will always be remembered for is the one he recorded himself. “Chevy Van,”
“Chevy Van” (1975) reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and remained in the chart for 17 weeks. It was awarded a gold disc by the R.I.A.A. on 4 May 1975.
Johns didn’t start out to write songs for other artists, but when country artist John Conlee covered “Common Man,” the single went gold and topped the charts. Conlee made the song his theme, and Johns was on his way writing songs for others.
His songs have also been hits for country legends Waylon Jennings, Sammy Kershaw, and Conway Twitty.
